Boat House and Dock Lighting
Here in sunny Charleston, SC, we have the pleasure of having miles of waterfront property. Whether along the Atlantic coast or a luxurious property that borders our countless rivers, creeks, waterways, and rivulets, docks and boathouses are a very common occurrence. This is true for anyone who lives anywhere near the water, be it fresh, salt, or brackish.
Many docks are incredibly long as they connect the owner’s land to deep water. Of course, many folks have a boathouse or some other type of shelter that often serves as a shack for fishing gear and boating accessories. Make it so these areas are also places to entertain! In fact, install an outdoor kitchen and you can cook the day’s catch just feet from your boat! Your dock, landing, and boathouse can be illuminated easily and beautifully with many of our lanterns here at Carolina Lanterns.
First, let’s consider the dock. Docks serve a purpose, but they can also be beautiful! Usually, docks are visible from the main house, so why not let your dock share the same aesthetic sensibility as your home? Here, we can intertwine form and function. The function of dock lighting, of course, is primarily for safety. People need to see where they are walking. Also, oncoming boats need to be able to see structures out on the water to prevent collisions. The form of the lighting is where stark can become spectacular! Let the inviting lights on your dock beckon to come enjoy the wind, water, and wonder of a safe, quiet, and relaxing night sitting on your dock.
Next, let’s move on to the structure that encapsulates and/or tethers your boat. This could be as simple as a floating dock to a true winterized boat house. Whichever the case, lighting is extremely important and the same principles that are used indoors can be used here. Every living space should have ambient light, task lighting, and accent lighting. Ambient light is the light that fills a space. Task lighting is light that focuses specifically on one area, whether for working, reading, or any other task that requires a higher concentration of light. Accent lighting is the light that displays certain architectural, natural, or artistic elements. These three lighting elements can be carried from the most basic of boat docks to the most elaborate of boat houses. Of course, there must be ambient light so that people can see what they are doing when they load and disembark their boats and ultimately tether to the dock. Tethering also could use some specific task lighting. Accent lighting, while optional, is an inexpensive way to make any area look polished.
Of course, when someone is looking to light a boat house, every aspect of lighting must be considered. These houses are used for entertaining, relaxing, and are a true extension of the main house. Some are winterized and used as guest quarters and summertime living. The warm, welcoming glow of some of our gas lanterns at the front door to your boat house sets the perfect tone for your home away from home… at home.
So, it really doesn’t matter if you live here in the Lowcountry or on the shores of Lake Michigan. Living on the water is enjoyed all over the world! Make your dock and boat house a place of peace and beauty and let our lanterns “shed some light on things”.
